The One Foundation has a simple vision: a world in which everyone has access to clean and safe water, forever.

Water is essential for life, yet over 844 million people around the world still don’t have access to safe drinking water. Over 3 million people die every year from waterborne diseases and most are children under 5 years old. Lack of access to safe water leaves families trapped in poverty, as they are forced to spend up to 4 hours a day collecting water at the expense of working or attending school.

Our 2016-2020 strategy focuses on four priority countries – Rwanda, Kenya, Malawi and Ghana. We work with partners pioneering sustainable approaches to ending water poverty in those countries, and those who provide clean water to some of the poorest and hardest to reach communities.

Global Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

In 2015 the United Nations agreed the Global Goals: a 15 year plan to end poverty, inequality and injustice. Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, is an express commitment to ensure everyone has access to clean water by 2030.

The One Foundation’s programmes will make a meaningful contribution to the achievement of Goal 6. Since we launched a decade ago, the number of people without access to clean water globally has reduced from over 1 billion to 884 million. We are proud to have played a part in this success but there is clearly much more to do.

Water Unite

One of the main challenges in achieving Global Goal 6 is the lack of sufficient funding for water projects. We are in the early stages of developing a transformative new project – Water Unite. Our idea is to leverage 1 cent per litre from all bottled water sold globally; creating a $3bn annual fund to invest in clean water programmes.

Ensuring a clean and safe water supply, forever

In the last decade, we have invested over £20 million in water and sanitation projects, helping over 3.6 million of the world’s poorest people.

Our projects have taken a holistic approach to ending water poverty – as well as drilling new boreholes, constructing wells and repairing faulty water pumps, we have also trained communities in the maintenance and repair of their water points and provided education on good hygiene practices.

Over the next four years we are investing in the programmes we believe will deliver lasting change to the communities we serve. We are working with trusted partners who have local expertise and global credibility to make sure that our beneficiaries have access to clean and safe water, forever.
