A heart warming ThursdayA heart warming Thursday

One big thank you from Malibongwe Primary School

What a lovely way to start a Thursday.  This morning I was sent a letter from Malibongwe Primary School - a school situated in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, who thanks to the support of World Duty Free, they have received a PlayPump.

Prior to the PlayPump® installation, all water was provided via a water tanker supplied by the Mkohndo Municipality that would travel from Ermelo. They could be without water for a week due to weather conditions, tanker breakdowns or road conditions.

The letter explains that the school is happy that they now have water throughout the year at any time of day.  They had previously experienced many problems due to the shortage of water – they were unable to cook for the pupils, unable to maintain a vegetable garden and they didn’t have flushing toilets.  Thanks to WDF, these problems are a thing of the past.

Now that they have a reliable source of clean drinking water, enrollment figures have increased from 550 pupils, to 730.

Principal Shabalala tells us:

"Your contribution has helped not only the education of the pupils and the promoting of the school infrastructure but it has helped advance lifestyles of the community members who always faces difficulties in the shortage of water supply by municipality in our area. Also the play pump has lead to a healthy and safe environment as water generated there is clean and pure. We are so pleased with the PlayPump, the children are always having fun, and most importantly, the number of children enrolled has risen because of the PlayPump. The children come into the school playground at the weekend to play on the PlayPump because they enjoy it so much while pumping water for us to drink”

“I am able to drink clean water at my school now. Because I am staying closer to the school I come and play here before I go home and I really enjoy myself”

I guess I’m ‘Little Miss Everything’, if you need to know something, come to Nikki. I have a wide range of responsibilities ranging from donor communications, case studies, to supporting the marketing team on various campaigns/projects. Everyday the team have me doing weird and wonderful things.

Duncan, being an old friend, asked me to come and work for him for just one day a week, he was drowning in admin and needed saving. He’s a trickster though, because he knows that once you enter the family of One, you are hooked and one day a week soon becomes a full time living, breathing passion.

Three years on, Global Ethics isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. From the pride you feel when you hear what you have achieved for thousands of beautiful children in Africa, to the late night emails that the team send while sitting there at 10pm working like a trojan with a glass of wine, to the belly laughs we have in the office. I’m very fortune to work with such an inspiring, passionate bunch of people, who really are my One family.
