Malawi family lifeMalawi family life

I was being driven to remote village locations today to check out some of our egg farming and health projects. I asked my driver Joey about his family life. He’s a jolly nice 43 year old chap who works with one of our NGO partners called Self Help Africa.

He explained that he came from a large family with 11 children. He was born and raised in Malawi. I wanted to know how poor they were and what life was like and it turned out his father was a station master and whilst they had the burden of travelling around with him following his job, they had a good stable income.

However, despite his relative fortune financially, he still lost two brothers, one at the age of just 15, both from Malaria and his father died from a heart attack in his forties.

He was astounded to hear that I have a grandmother who is 94. >

Losing loved ones is certainly more frequent in this country and I’m sure the loss is just as hard.
